Yeah. Although I loved the old cover, it didn't sell all that well (not necessarily because of the cover but because the book was orphaned about four times from when it was bought and because the imprint it was meant for was killed off at the same time.
As I understand it, yes. The conference always has an 'exhibit hall' where publishers set up booths and give out ARCs to the librarians, who read, review, and hopefully buy copies of the final release for their libraries. I've never heard of a publisher who went home with books, either :) It's the largest library conference in North America and there are always thousands of librarians there. This year it's in Anaheim, CA from June 26 through July 1st, although the big exhibit days are usually on the weekend. ALA does two conferences a year, one in June/July and a smaller one in January.
