Further to Gavin and Kelly's post about Bad news about YBFH --yes the YBFH is no more but I'm delighted to announce that I've just been offered a two book deal with Night Shade to edit a Best of the Year in Horror anthology (not titled yet)--for this year and next...
The deal is not set in stone but there's no reason to believe it's not a "go."
So thank you Terri, Kelly, Gavin, and of course Jim Frenkel and Tom Canty for the many enjoyable years I've worked with you all on this massive project.
And here's a virtual toast to my new endeavor.
addition: I wrote the above off the cuff yesterday because I felt pressure to get something out but I'd like to add this.
Without Jim Frenkel, the series would haven't existed at all. It was his brainchild from the very first volume, to gather fantasy and horror short fiction in one place. He asked me and Terri Windling to co-edit such a book, she handling fantasy, me horror. We agreed and that's how it all began --Jim was the packager for all twenty-one years of the existence of the anthology.

Terri sums it all up most graciously and eloquently on her blog

The Resurrectionist by Jack O’Connell (Algonquin) is the author’s fifth novel and as his previous ones his lucid prose easily carries the reader into realms of the Gothic and begins with a man taking a job in a very special clinic in the hopes that it can miraculously help his comatose son. A second strand of the story is the adventures of a group of circus freaks on the run from hostility and discrimination.
Sharp Teeth by Toby Barlow (Harper) is a werewolf novel told in verse, but don’t let that scare you away. It’s free verse, not rhyming and it’s wonderfully gripping, in part to the compression of language. Go and read it, you will not be disappointed. Highly recommended.

Several people have asked me to discuss the process, but more I think would like to know the thinking process that goes into my book. I can't speak for other Year's Best editors--we all have our own different ways of working and of course, different tastes.
What I'll attempt to do periodically, is post a few of my mini-reviews of novels/collections/anthologies/magazines and maybe even non-fiction titles that I'm reading and making notes on during the year. And I will try to answer questions about why something worked for me...
I am NOT a critic, I'm not even any kind of expert on horror's history. I just have read over the past 21 years, and continue read a lot of horror short stories and know what I do and don't like. I may not always be able to define the why of my judgment.
I'm certainly open to arguments as to why someone else thinks I missed the boat on something...the only problem with that is that I may just say--well it didn't work for me or I hated it ;-) and the latter is something I'd rather NOT do. I will not trash anything in public, although I reserve the right to give negative criticism on occasion.
One thing I'll add, is that YBFH is an ongoing project--I rarely take a break between the last and next volume. I'm constantly taking notes on what I've read. I've stopped mentioning every magazine I read but instead mention the top maybe ten in genre and those that while not in-genre can be counted on to have some good dark fiction, at least once in awhile.
I'll start posting some of my 2007 notes in the next entry.

I have no idea if anyone is aware, but I've been posting a selection of my Year's best reviews on my website under the "Meandering" link for a few years now. Basically, I post the novels I read plus some of the collections and anthologies.
Recently, some of my 2003 reviews went up and my webmaster just posted my 2004 reviews here:
YBFH#18 reviews
I'll be coding and organizing my 2005 reviews this evening and hopefully they'll go up in the next day or so as well.
