Last night I watched Bergman's The Silence for the first time. I heard about it when growing up and although I saw a lot of Bergman in the mid to late seventies and thereafter I realize now that I didn't see some of those from this period (the early 60s). It's (very) basically about two sisters and a child of one of them stuck in a foreign European town while one sister is sick.
Sven Nyquist's black and white cinematography is beautiful. What a master of shadow he was. I knew very little about the movie beforehand other than an overall idea of what it was about and remembering vaguely that it cause a ruckus because of SEX. I can see why it would have at that time--I don't want to provide spoilers here so I'll just say there's varying kinds of sex and implied sex throughout the movie. It's languid and sensual but definitely not boring. To me it seems related thematically to Persona made three years later.
And today I went to see Sweeney Todd and enjoyed it very much. I was disappointed that the theme song wasn't used over the end credits--that's where I think it would have fit perfectly but still, a very nicely done re-creation of the musical. London never looked so horrific (except for 28 Days Later--for the opposite reason than ST): squalor and poverty, rats, gloom, soot, and a beautifully rendered blue-gray skyline from pollution. The acting was fine--Helena Bonham Carter excellent as was Johnny Depp. The young boy Toby had the best voice, but that's to be expected as most of the leads were not chosen for their voices. A lot of blood and horror.
