I'm in the airport where there is free wifi that works like a dream (unlike the hotel lobby and mezzanine, where I was unable to stay connected (ever) to the hotel wireless had to use a Linksys connection instead (that worked fine). Yesterday, I was on a very good panel about editing--You think you can be an editor? We actually talked about what editors do for a change, which was nice.
I was then interviewed by Allison Stein, who did a great job.

After the closing ceremonies, Parris and I grabbed a cab to the closest Casino and played the very cheap slots for a couple of hours. I think I lost about $35 and she won $115. Then took a cab to teh Savoy Grill, a traditional steak house that was Heinlein's favorite. We met with several con people and a guest or two and had a marvelous time. The steak was fabulous. Apparently, the hotel and steakhouse have been sold to someone who plans to restore and reopen in a year or so. The inside of the steakhouse is beautiful--stained glass windows and dark wood. But the exterior needs work--haven't seen the inside of hotel but apparently the owner hopes to make it into a "boutique" hotel. Some of the waiters at the Steakhouse have been there for 40 years. I wonder what they'll do.

After returning to the Hyatt I attended the dead dog party for a little while but knew I had to get to bed fairly early because of my 9:50 am flight home.

I think I already mentioned how fantastic Arthur Bryant's ribs were. I share some of Chris McKitterick's and gave him more than half my burnt ends, which were not burnt enough--no crunch. But the dry ribs with the hot and sweet sauce were heavenly.

Everyone at the con was lovely --a very hospitable, friendly place.

But as usual, I'm glad to be going home.

Hi Orrin,
Just walked in the door. I had a great time and I'm really happy I finally met you.

I generally issue a deep sigh when beloved guests come into KC and want to head off to the barbecue joints. I have lived here most of my life - and I hate barbecue. Go figure.

Karma got its revenge, I guess, when the Nebs were in Austin last year. Virtually every damn meal was at some Texas barbecue joint. If I wanted to eat and socialize, it was barbecue. Sheesh!

But I'm very glad you had a good time and enjoyed the trip to KC. Did Parris -really- win $115 or did she just threaten the management with those two immense axes she bought in the charity auction.

I'm sorry (sniff)--the steak last night was pretty delicious (and very expensive).

Yes, she did! I was sitting next to her for awhile as she won won won--I had to move machines as mine stopped taking my cash (Parris suggested it was trying to tell me something)...but I just moved elsewhere to lose a little more.

Hi Allison,
Thank you. I do sometimes get distracted from the point and need to be gently shoved back on-track :-)

barbecue, from a complete stranger

I quite liked Arthur Bryant's, the one time I was in Kansas City; finally, I understood what the fuss was about barbecue.

Yes! We went to the original one. The atmosphere is not great--you order at a the counter and bring your meal back to tables. And you can't really linger as there was a line out the door by the time we were just finishing eating.

That's the one I went to as well; you're right about the decor! Never-been-refurbished '50s diner is my description. It was just as busy when we went there, though I think we arrived after the rush.

HI!CANIHELPYOU??? Not my favourite bbq in KC, but quite acceptable. Actually, my favourite place from MY years there is no longer nearly as good, & I have a new one.

I'm glad you had a good time at the con! I was at Balticon this weekend - also a good time. I feel like there was even a third con going on at the same time - busy weekend for sci-fi/fantasy and the like!

That's the most important thing--that you have a good place now :-)
