As some of you might know, I'm working on a reprint anthology for Tachyon with the subtitle: Two Decades of Modern Horror. I am NOT looking for stories--I've chosen most of them already and know what other authors are going to be in the book (it's unfortunately, not as LARGE a book as I'd need, to actually do justice to the subject)... and it covers 1984-2005.

The problem is, we need a strong, catchy, evocative, serious title. The one suggested by my publisher as a possibility I like but don't love --as it doesn't quite feel catchy enough:

Harbingers: Two Decades of Modern Horror.

So we're open to suggestions.

I'm afraid the first thing that came to mind was "Republicans".

Sounds like a terrific anthology.

here's a couple ideas:

Dark Dreaming: Two Decades of Modern Horror
The Blackened Bough: Two Decades of Modern Horror

LOL--thank you for the laugh but that is NOT helpful ;-)

Harbingers:

I swear, I read that as "Hat-bringers." I am very very tired....

My .02 is that you'll need a more evocative/ominous word, if you're going for a single word title.

Dark Dreaming feels too light to me..
Blackened ...something...is not bad--but what does "the blackened bough" mean?

Revenants means ghosts--too specific. They're not only ghost stories.

Kind of a play on The Golden Bough...I was also thinking "The Obsidian Bough" but maybe also too "light"?

I was going to suggest "Blackened Visions," but it sounds like an eye disorder...Images? Dark Images?

Technically, yes, that's one definition, and possibly the most well known.

It also means to return, as in from a lengthy absence though as well.}:)

By the by, the book arrived Weds, thank you! And thanks for signing it too, that was very unexpected.

But the ghost definition is the one most people looking at the cover would think of.

Oh good! Enjoy.

"Portents" has a more ominous ring than "Harbingers". "Dark Harbingers" has a nice lilt to it, but nice lilts are hardly what you want here.

Harbingers has harder consonants in it..."Portents" sounds (to me) less ominous than "Harbingers."

Beyond Terror: Two Decades of Modern Horror.
Distortions of Reality: Two Decades of Modern Horror.
Treacherous Dreams: Two Decades of Modern Horror.
Anguished Cries: Two Decades of Modern Horror.
Lurking Fears: Two Decades of Modern Horror.
Expectations: Two Decades of Modern Horror.

Dark Reflections

(From) Memory's Abyss

Unforgettable (tee hee!)

An Ominous Score (get it? score? I'm so needlessly witty today)

...I'll keep brainstorming for you :)

Re: Just Name it after the scariest horror story of the past two decades

Unfortunately, that story was published in 1984 and I'm taking Ed Bryant's "Dancing Chickens" from that year. I can't take anything else that early.
But it would have been a catchy title.
