I'm editing an ALL REPRINT anthology of science fiction, fantasy, and horror cat stories from the past 20 or so years for Night Shade and would love suggestions. John Joseph Adams has graciously set up a spreadsheet for me to use ala what he's been using for his massive reprint anthologies.

Here is the list of the stories I'm thinking of using.

Also, I already have in-hand several cat anthologies so please don't rec anything from them--if you click Cat story spreadsheet you'll see which I've got and a rec form.
The spread sheet is fixed now.

But if you have a problem, let me know here.
Thanks everyone in advance.

Edited to add: NO EMAIL SUBMISSIONS unless requested.

Another edit December 21st: And no replies unless I take something, in which case I will let you know.
I'm not even going to start reading for this until February or March so for now, I'm just putting the incoming stories in a folder.

and happy winter solstice :-)

I hope you don't mind me responding like this but I don't recall the author offhand. The story was collected in the Year's Best Horror & Fantasy anthology, perhaps 8-10 yrs. ago. It was about a man trapped in a difficult relationship with a bulimic woman, who falls in love with a motorcycle courier, who later turns out to (maybe) be a cat.
I can go thru my books and see if I can find the title and author. One of my volumes was "borrowed" by a student years ago and never returned, however.

"Not Waving" by Michael Marshall Smith. Already on my list.

From: [identity profile] charlesatan.livejournal.com

Good luck with the antho!

Can the story belong to others of the cat family (i.e. leopards, lions, etc.) or is it exclusively the home cat variety?

From: [identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com

All types of cats welcome ;-) (you'll see from those I'm already considering)

Ellen, suggestions to your spread sheet are coming in with the date and time instead of the title of the story. I recommended Tappan's "A Most Obedient Cat", from Jane Yolen's Xanadu 2, 1993.

From: [identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com

Arghh. The spreadsheet isn't recording titles right now (I"m trying to get John to help fix it) so in the meantime, those, who have recced things on it, please tell me the title here. (I've already filled in Tappan's and Laura Anne's stories but I don't know the titles of the Resnick or Pratt.

I have to toot my own horn and suggest "The Spellweaver's Tale," which was published online at Elysianfiction.com during its short but sweet tenure. I can email you a copy if you like, since it hasn't exactly seen the light of day in a while.

If an online magazine that only lasted a year or so isn't pro enough for consideration, that's cool. Just had to toss it out there into the mix. :>

If you want you can snail mail a copy to the address on the form. No email subs, unless specifically requested.

Fun anthology! Looking forward to reading it.

Do you remember a film titled The Leopard Man, made in 1943? It was directed by Jaques Tourneur, and was one of the first movies to allude to the subject of serial killers.

My comment has no bearing on story suggestions, obviously. It's just that your post reminded me of the movie. It was one of my faves from childhood.

Nope. But I did seeCat People by him, which was really really creepy.

It's long out of print, but there's a wonderful anthology called 'Supernatural Cats' http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?SPRNTRLCTS1972 , which I read 30+ years ago and recently rediscovered in a university library. It introduced me to 'Space-Time for Springers', 'The Game of Rat and Dragon', 'The Squaw', and many other stories... including a personal favourite, 'Compliments of the Author' by Lewis Padgett, which I've never seen reprinted anywhere else.

Hi Stephen,
I'm ONLY looking for modern stories--from 1985 and on.

From: [identity profile] charlesatan.livejournal.com

It just occurred to me that until John manages to fix the spreadsheet, you should tell people to put the title under Notes. Not everyone might be reading your comments (or spot your reply immediately).

From: [identity profile] 14theditch.livejournal.com

Sorry if someone else mentioned this one, but there's a pretty twisted cat story in the new Stephen King collection. Did you see that one?

From: [identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com

Hi Jeff,
I published in in Twists of the Tale--I'll probably try to acquire rights but may not be able to because it's IN his current collection.

Just helping out those who've already submitted entries into the spreadsheet:

Keesa Renee DuPre story (for GUD Magazine) is "Persian on the Forty-Second Floor".

From: [identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com

Thanks so much. I hadn't realized other submitted titles.

From: [identity profile] charlesatan.livejournal.com

There's (possibly) a couple of errors in Melissa Mead's submission.

The title is On Her Own Two Feet and it was published in October 2004 of the magazine, not September 2008.

From: [identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com

Sounds like it might be a different story--hopefully she'll come back and clarify :-)

I can't recall the name, but I think LA Taylor wrote a good cat story.

Sorry for the lack of preciseness.

Joyce

Thanks Joyce. If you remember any of the details -like title and where it was published--let me know.

Hi Ellen,

Charles already mentioned "Romanticore" by Tim Pratt, but I've listed all the other cat stories to appear in ROF. I messed up the first entry though. The title should be "Tiger, Tiger."

From: [identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com

Alan F just entered a story by Reggie Oliver but didn't put the title in the NOTES section --please let me know the title. As mentioned in my post above--the first cell of the spreadsheet is NOT working so titles are NOT being recorded.
thanks
ellen

Ah timing! Wondering when I was going to get to mention this and now you've got an anthology...:)

List of anthologies?

Unfortunately, when I click on this link, I get the rec form, but not a list of the anthologies you've got in hand. I did see the list of stories you're already considering. Thanks for your help.
