Sf/f writer and editor Vera Nazarian will lose her house if she cannot raise $11,000+ by December 20th so many in the community have gotten together to help. There is an online auction going on right now at the HelpVera blog , which also explains her plight.

You can donate money to a paypal account, you can bid on auction items, including a one of a kind quilt by the amazing Pam Scoville, signed books, (including a hc copy of YBFH #21, which I and Elizabeth Hand will sign --Liz will give me a signed book plate that I will take home with me from Maine), jewelry, candles, poems, and other interesting items. A great opportunity to help out and to do some Xmas shopping while you're at it. At least go and check it all out.

Update December 6:
UPDATE: In just two days, we raised a whopping sum of $7022.56! While this is not yet sufficient to save Vera's house, this is more than HALF of the amount needed. Thank you so much for your generosity and hard work everyone, and keep it up please!

Keep going. You can donate via paypal or by check --even $5 will help.

Sunday, December 7th update from the site:
"As of 10:00 p.m. (PST), people have contributed amounts ranging from $1 to $750, with a total of $10,592.80, so we're almost there. Thanks to all the people from overseas; we've seen people from Ireland, the UK, France, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, Belgium, Finland, France, Brazil, Sweden, and the Philippines. Most people didn't send addresses, so I may have missed your country. :)

Update: Did I mention that there were more than 400 contributions? No!
Well, there were. :)

UPDATE TWO: Thanks to a very generous donation, the total amount past due on Vera's mortgage has been raised.

Any additional monies will be used to get her help for representation for getting better terms on her loan, medical, sewer, and a buffer so she can have a nice holiday dinner."

From me (Ellen) There are still a bunch of auctions going on (including for YBFH #21 hc) that won't be ending for a few days so I urge all of you who haven't yet gone over there, please do.
The support from the community shows the true Xmas spirit.
Thanks so much.

sent what I could...

Maybe they can get a jar of cranberry sauce w/ it? ;-)

I just want to say it is so inspiring to see people reach out like this. Maybe they can only do a little, but the fact that, in these apathetic days, they are doing even that is remarkable. & when enough people do even a little, it can change everything. Inertia may be a powerful force, but kindness CAN be stronger. Thanks for reinforcing that here.

Every bit helps. I know. It IS amazing. But the sf/f community does tend to care for its own--if it discovers that there's a problem.
