I watched Away From Her, with Julie Christie in her Oscar nominated role and directed by Sarah Polley. It's based on an Alice Munro story about a marriage of 44 years and the effect on that marriage as the wife develops Alzheimer's. I thought the movie would be incredibly depressing--it was sad and frightening for anyone who fears Alzheimer's (as I do) but it was also totally absorbing.

And the yummy movie The Long, Hot Summer that I promised myself to watch after reading about Paul Newman's death. It was everything I remembered--actually much sexier than I remembered--I have a feeling that when I watched it years ago on tv I missed a lot of the sexual under and overtones. What a hunk! Angela Lansbury is bitingly charming as Will Varner's (Orson Welles') squeeze. Anthony Franciosa was not bad as the weakling Varner son who's married to the sexy Eula (Lee Remick). Good stuff.

These both sound very good. I'm tempted to try that Netflix trial they sent me in the mail...

The Long Hot Summer burned. Woo. That chemistry. This is when Paul and Joanne met. No wonder they spent the rest of their lives together.

Yeah, Newman could have burned down the plantation without using matches!

The ending, though, was pretty ridiculous when it turns out that his being a barn burner was just a kind of lark.

His father was the barn burner. I think that he didn't burn down barns but because of his father had that reputation.
