I hadn't known he was ill. There are writers/actors I've always hoped to meet and then I realize (particularly with actors) that this would be a very bad thing and that I should just be happy with whatever it is about them I like onscreen :-). Of course, I have met many many writers--but some of the BIG ones I feel shy with--even Joyce Carol Oates, who I've met several times now (even for a meal).
