Some background. Although I don't write, my parents have always been supportive of my editing work, even if they may not understand exactly what that entails. My dad has embarrassed me in the past by going into bookstores and introducing "his daughter, the editor who has a bunch of anthologies" to the clerks.
My mom reads all my anthologies. In fact, she tried to read Neuromancer because she knew that I'd published Bill in OMNI. But alas, she couldn't get into it. In fact, she usually tells me she doesn't like most of my anthologies--and I finally understood why when she told me that the only story she enjoyed in The Del Rey Book of Science Fiction and Fantasy was "Jimmy" by Pat Cadigan--and it was "because it was set in the real world and she knew a boy like Jimmy."....
So...when, the other day we were on the phone and she raved about how much she enjoyed Inferno and why, I asked her to email me what she thought about it. And she did:
"I loved the book. It's the best one you've ever done.
Maybe I liked it so much because the stories seem grounded in real emotions and events. For people who may shun horror, science fiction, or fantasy, this could be the graceful introduction to the genre.
So many of the stories start off in a familiar, though interesting place and drop you into the dark hole that curdles the blood. What could more fun?
As always, the literary quality is wonderful. Sometimes, poetic. I look forward to all your future stuff. I'm really proud of this one!"
Love,
Mom
(sorry to the contributors to ALL my other anthologies ;-) )

I think its a great review. In fact it is the kind of review that makes me want to give a copy to someone! The line, "this could be the graceful introduction to the genre." is a wonderful statement. Getting more people into the genre is a real trick. She should put that on an Amazon review. It would make me take notice :D

It would look weird as an amazon review--nepotism :-)

She wrote me:
"Found the blog and I'm a celebrity!
I didn't want to add a comment as I'm afraid my audience will think I've a swelled head.
I have loved many of your stories in various anthologies. *Remember the fairies in the pocketbook?
Love and kisses"
*"The Faery Handbag" by Kelly Link.
