I like Jack O'Connell as well and quite enjoyed THE RESURRECTIONIST when I read it recently. It follows the same practice of alternating chapters between our reality and a linked imaginary one that you also see in novels like BONES OF THE MOON and TUMBLING AFTER, but it manages to be sufficiently original and has a strong ending.

That book is next after I finish The Yiddish Policeman's Union, which I hope to do on a bus upstate this weekend....I'm not sure anything of his can beat Word Made Flesh, his last.

I liked YIDDISH POLICEMAN'S UNION a lot too. It was quite dark, more so than KAVALIER AND CLAY.

I never had time to read Kavalier and Clay although I've got it.
