I'm extremely proud to announce that I've been selected for the British Fantasy Society Special Karl Edward Wagner Award at Fantasycon in Nottingham this weekend. Paul Barnett (aka John Grant) accepted it for me. The committee gives it to "someone who the committee feels has made an outstanding contribution to the genre."
It's named, of course, after the marvelous writer and editor Karl Edward Wagner, whose life was cut short by his alcoholism.
This is what I asked Paul to say for me:
"When I was informed that I was to be awarded this honor I was flabbergasted—and thrilled. I’m sorry not to be there with you to accept it, but I’ve sent my emissary with my thanks and my suggestion that he spring for drinks for everyone at the ceremony—on HIS shilling, of course –thank you Paul!
But to be serious for a moment. I’m especially grateful to have won an award named for our brilliant, loved, and gone-too-soon writer and editor and friend Karl Edward Wagner. I thank the British Fantasy Society committee for honoring me so. But most of all, I thank all the short story writers I’ve worked with over the years and who I hope to continue working with for many years to come."

It kind of shocked me--my first thought was "am I THAT old" (or rather, have I really been in the field that long?)--I guess so on both counts ;-)

And John. I sure hope so. (although Karl and I disagreed a lot on our choices when we were both editing our Year's bests at the same time).

You know, you and Terri Windling were the only editors that I knew by name before I started writing.
