But first, I'm home and so happy to be here. Of course, I'm going off for the next two weekends to be Guest of Honor at Aggiecon in College Station, TX and then Radcon in Pasco Washington but still. The weather when I returned Friday afternoon was a shock, even though it was cooler than usual down in Florida.
A bit of excitement taking off from West Palm Beach airport. We were on the runway, in the process of speeding up to take off when the plane slowed down and stopped. We were told by the Captain that he'd aborted takeoff because a flock of birds to the right side of the plane (I was on the left) took off and one flew into the nose of the plane. So... just to make sure dead birdie didn't get into the engines, we had to return to the gate for said engines to be checked out. While we waited the Captain said he's come down the aisle to ask questions. He got to me (2/3 of the way back) and I asked what kind of bird it was but he didn't know. I'm guessing egrets or something. After a mere half hour delay we were on our way.
I got a lot of editing done on Teeth while in Florida and am finishing up the rest of the stories over the next few days. Terri and I plan to hand in the book in a few weeks, if the last stories come in when they should.
Then I can start serious reading for two other original anthologies I'm working on.
I woke up to the sad news that Kage Baker finally succumbed to the cancer she'd been fighting for a couple of years (in private). I didn't really know her personally, but published a lovely "company" story on SCIFICTION. Rest in Peace, Kage.
And I'm sure everyone's heard about the staring contest between Amazon and Macmillan, during which time (over this weekend) Tor and St Martin's and other Macmillan owned publisher titles were removed from amazon. As of tonight, amazon caved--for now. Although the titles are not yet available for purchase for amazon.
Started preliminary work on my taxes-ugh. Got to go through all the receipts next week as my appt with my tax guy is the 9th.
Watched some really bad movies over the weekend: Watchmen, which even though I read the graphic novel years ago, couldn't barely make heads nor tales of. It was an ok viewing experience while watching but it left a big void as soon as it was over. Australia was even worse --and loooong. Loved watching Hugh Jackman. Couldn't stand Nicole Kidman's plastic face and stiff hoity toity Englishwoman. No chemistry whatsoever. Blchhh. Angel cleansed my palate in between. Now in the middle of the third season. I love Julie Benz as Darla and watching her makes me feel that her role of Rita in Dexter is such a comedown. I'm guessing she wanted a change from hot, bitch vampire babe but she's better than that.
Back to work editing.
