This weekend I watched three movies I never saw when they came out:

Harper with Paul Newman, Lauren Bacall, Janet Leigh, Julie Harris, Shelly Winters, Robert Webber, Arthur Hill, Pamela Tiffin(!), Robert Wagner, and others. Made in 1966 and it feels it, with Pamela Tiffin doing the frug or maybe the twist. Bacall hires Lew Harper to find her missing husband. Complications ensue and it gets ugly. A good gaggle of actors in an entertaining film. I liked Newman as Harper, a private eye but couldn't see Janet Leigh as his soon to be ex-wife (if he ever signs the divorce papers).

Get Carter with Michael Caine (1971) directed by Mike Hodges. Brutal, ugly, gangsters, violence, revenge, porn, betrayals all around. Caine at his best. Brilliant.

Heaven Can Wait (1978)with Warren Beatty, Julie Christie, Dyan Cannon, Charles Grodin, Jack Warden, Buck Henry (who directed it with Beatty), James Mason (terrific). Football player for the LA Rams is taken from his body prematurely when a new "escort" (angel?)to Heaven errs--to make up for it, he's given a temporary body of someone about to die. The ending works only if you believe the "soul" is more important than "personality" in what makes up an individual human. Ok while watching but I got kind of pissed off after the fact.
