I'm visiting Kelly & Gavin in their large house in Northampton, and awaiting the blizzard, which is supposed to be here any hour now. The skies are white/gray-just the color of impending snow but so far ....nothing.

Last night we watched The Last Winter--how appropriate, which starts Ron Perlman as the head of a team of oil engineers trying to get some mining going in the Arctic as the climate starts warming. Bad things start emanating from the melting permafrost -nice and creepy. And it looks coolllld. There was a good sense of dread in this movie--initially I thought it was going to be similar to The Thing but no (luckily). Some interesting group dynamics, although most of the secondary characters didn't really impress themselves on me--their parts were very underwritten. The "monsters" were--I thought --nicely wrought, although I'd have preferred for them to have stayed much more impressionistic than they are by the end....

Well, after that, we needed something cheerier and warm so we watched Hellboy 2, coincidentally also starring Perlman (we picked up both movies from the local video store yesterday evening and it really WAS a coincidence)--fun and kind of charming--I hadn't seen #1--and great monsters, especially the tooth fairies.

I'm a few miles down the road from you, and we're still waiting for the snow, too. Wouldn't it be funny if it never started?

I was pretty disappointed in Hellboy 2, but one thing that certainly did not disappoint about it were the monsters.

Yes. That would be very weird, considering Amherst postponed their exams for today and tomorrow and everyone is all set for the BLIZZARD of 08!

I wonder if I should bother with the first Hellboy--Kelly says they've got the DVD so maybe we'll watch it tonight.

Agreed about The Last Winter - I don't think anything they showed at the end could have lived up to my imagination, and would have preferred for them not to have shown anything discernible at all. However, that's a small quibble about a movie I thought was pretty good overall.

Personally, I liked the first one a lot better. Conversely, though, there were a lot fewer monsters.

That did happen to me once, in western NY, when I was in high school. They shut everything down, sent everybody home, and it never snowed.

Yes, and the "wendigo" idea could have been thrown out completely--it was just a distraction from the environmental loopiness.

I know we're expecting massive snowfall here in NH! Cozy is a good thing right now.

Say hello to the Happy Valley for me! I lived there for seven years. I miss the Normand Bakery--have some Heidsand cookies for me!

If you like Ron Perlman, you should check out the new FX series he stars in, "Sons of Anarchy". He plays the patriarch of a motorcycle gang in Albequerque. It's a great show.

The only Wendigo is Larry Fessenden's "Wendigo"...

Oh and the snow is falling fast and furious in Albany and has been for over an hour! It's headed your way...

From: [identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com

The Last Winter is also by Fessenden.

Not such a Perlman fan. I like him ok but don't go out of my way to watch his movies.

Here too... I guess they weren't wrong, after all! Enjoy! Northampton is a nice place to be in the snow. :)

ah,that's right! (slaps forehead) I forgot it was the third one in the trilogy; it's been on my list forever now.

Ron Perlman won my heart when he starred as 'Vincent' in Beauty and the Beast tv series (with Linda Hamilton). He can play *anything*.

ya know...

I've been living in Minnesota for 13 years now. Do WE get blizzards? NO. Catch anyone in MN cancelling ANYTHING in anticipation. I keep saying "If we don't close for bad weather in winter, can we close for GOOD weather in the spring?"

btw...

did you catch my post from yesterday? The local cheese shop stocks Isle of Mull cheese now. We're having some for Xmas dinner. ;-) Apparently, there is a complimentary whiskey that goes w/ it. I need to find some (the guy in the store told me, but my usual memory for names took it before I even left the store, of course).

I didn't realize it's a trilogy--what were the first two?

Re: ya know...

LOL--I know. We folk are wimps...can't take a little snowfall.

From: [identity profile] pds-lit.livejournal.com

Now Ellen, why would you want the roof to fall in. That would just make another mess for me to clean. :)

From: [identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com

Damn! I'm sorry --I'm doing this a lot. I meant I hope the roof doesn't fall in!!!

wait until the lights go out and you start hearing weird noises in the darkest corners. A popping....

From: [identity profile] imago1.livejournal.com

Hi to Kelly and Gavin. It has snowed 8-10 inches here tha past couple of days. Our neighborhood is a sparkly white Christmas wonderland.

From: [identity profile] chalkhorse.livejournal.com

Actually, my mistake: WENDIGO was the third installment in the trilogy including HABIT and NO TELLING. (I researched Fessenden for an article a while back and am misremembering my facts..)

Agreed about the ending of Last Winter. Should have left it more ambiguous. And I'm one of the few who actually liked HB2. I thought it was fun.

From: [identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com

Just watched HB1 and boy are there two big plot holes--and totally unnecessary--I HATE that.
