There's a new half-hour Wallace and Gromit short due out this Christmas, premiering on BBC-TV. Called 'A Matter of Loaf and Death', it once again features venerable British character actor Peter Sallis as Wallace. Because of its release date, it's not eligible for Academy Award consideration for this year (as best animated short), but will be eligible for the 2010 awards. Don't know when it will be shown in North America, but I can't wait to see it. I was living in England when the last W & G short - 'A Close Shave' - premiered on Christmas Eve, and I can remember my mother-in-law and I howling with laughter while poor Christopher, who had flu, was trying to sleep upstairs.
Their full-length film, 'Curse of the Were-Rabbit', deservedly won on Oscar, although in some ways I think Nick Park's first feature film, 'Chicken Run', is even funnier; maybe because I love its source, 'The Great Escape', so much. A generation of kids who see Park's film first are going to stumble on 'The Great Escape' later in life and exclaim 'Hey, it's "Chicken Run", but with people instead of poultry!'
