I don't have much time as I've got to get ready for a New Year's Day brunch wherein many gifts will be exchanged with those I didn't see on Xmas day. (and some birthday gifts for and from me, too).

Rock n Roll by Stoppard was GREAT. It takes place in Cambridge, England and Prague, Czechoslavakia from 1968 through the break up of the Soviet Union and stars Rufus Sewell, as Jan, a Czech who studied with Brian Cox's Max (a steadfast Communist) at Cambridge. Sinead Cusick plays Max's wife Eleanor and later their daughter Esme. It's a capsule history of the Czech experience during that period and the agony of early supporters of Communism (outside of the Soviet Union) who saw in Socialism hope and instead got totalitarianism. There's a lot of talk but it's fascinating. Three hours that zipped along. Go see it if you can.

Dinner at Ellie's --delicious and I drank and ate too much. More description later. Here is a photo of her gift to me--a very weird doll (to go with one she gave me a few years ago). I thought it was a bear with a raccoon tail, but apparently it's a raccoon (although the head, which you can't see from this photo--on the web) is very un-raccoon-like):

Bandit the Raccoon

Rick Bowes, who joined us gave me a doll head (he knows what I like) and a history of
Funny Faces (Mr and Mrs Potatohead, et al) co- written by author Mark Rich, who apparently has an amazing toy collection....

Anyway, gotta run. More later.
Happy new year everyone!

If it's by Stoppard and stars Sewell, I'm so there. Thanks for the reference - I haven't heard a word about this film! :)

Happy New Year!

I've heard brilliant things about Rock n Roll. And Rufus Sewell is great in Stoppard. I recently listened to the BBC recording of Arcadia starring Rufus Sewell and Bill Nye and it was really impressive. I would have loved to see it on stage.

I think I saw Arcadia but don't recall if it was in the UK or US or even who was in it. What Michael Gambon in that one?

Which explains a lot. Thank you!

(Glad to see that Sewell's doing what he considers "serious acting," again. I read an interview with him a few years back in which he trashed just about every film I've seen him appear in. He didn't strike me as being especially gracious about his career, but I enjoy his performances anyway.)

Rock 'n' Roll was marvelous (although I was more taken with Coast of Utopia, especially part II). Glad you had such a great New Year's celebration; Happy New Year back atcha!

Hi Barbara,
I missed Coast of Utopia part I and II, unfortunately.
Yes, I'm now getting over the celebrating :-)

Isn't it terrible? I am so not in a working mood. Also I still haven't finished my holiday cards.

Oh, who am I kidding? I haven't started my holiday cards. Darn it!
