I hadn't considered the broken-down male trope -- you're quite right. I've never quite understood the whole point of such story lines and they don't amuse me, so I haven't read many of them. :)
When faced with a choice of "man seeks daughter-aged woman/woman seeks father-aged man" (because let's face it, it's never *really* for the conversation and deep understanding) and "man and woman find someone equal and complimentary", I know which one I'd rather read -- and write for, when I get that far.
