This evening I went to see the revival of Gypsy with Patti Lupone, Boyd Gaines, and Laura Benanti...I loved it. This mama Rose was a less sexy than Bernadette Peters was in the same role a few years ago but even more ferocious and mad (as in insane) in the last scenes.
A little background for those who don't know it. The musical is based on the lives of actress June Havoc and stripper/author Gypsy Rose Lee. Ethel Merman is the first who made the role of mama (always the star in the production) her own. "Mama" is the monster of stage mothers.
I didn't see the movie, which had Natalie Wood as Louise (Rosalind Russell as mama)--and actually, if it's on netflix, I'll rent it now.
I'm wiped out. Woke up at 7:15 am (thanks to Dinah)and although I usually just fall back to sleep for three hours or so, this time I couldn't, so gave up and got up at 8am, an ungodly hour for me considering I usually don't get to bed till 2am.
Also, another rave for Inferno by J.L. Comeau on her website:
