Last night I watched Mr. Brooks with Kevin Costner, William Hurt, and Demi Moore, which I quite liked. I'd meant to see it in the theater but didn't get around to it. Kevin Costner as Mr. Brooks plays a pleasant, happily married successful businessman who happens to be a serial killer. It was nicely done and I enjoyed it a lot.

Then I watched Spider starring Ralph Fiennes and directed by David Cronenberg, based on Patrick McGrath's (that's pronounced McGraw) novel of the same name. McGrath wrote the script. I went in knowing it was going to be depressing even though I didn't remember the book all that well. It was tough to watch. Fiennes was excellent as the mumbling former mental patient who moves into what seems to be a halfway house/boarding house for the mentally ill. It wasn't fun and I can't say I enjoyed it except for the acting. Oh and for Gabriel Byrne who plays the Fiennes character's father... I thought of watching the other movie I have (The Prince and the Showgirl) to cheer me up but it was too late. I started proofreading The Del Rey Book of SF &F instead.
