Starting last week, the out of towners started arriving and I've been busy (as I expected) every since. What I didn't expect was that there would be no hot water in my building for going on two days because the hot water heater went out--it's not the boiler, we suddenly have heat now that fall has finally arrived. Oh, and the heater will be replaced tomorrow so although I will force myself to jump into a cold shower in the morning, I hope that I can have a leisurely hot shower and wash my hair in the late afternoon.
So a lovely Sunday brunch with Garth Nix, Jonathan Strahan, and Deb Biancotti Sunday at Dos Caminos, on Park avenue south where we had their wonderful fresh guacamole and frozen margaritas that come with the brunch. Then Garth went back to his hotel while Deb, Jonathan and I walked west and stopped in the last good flea market in the 26th and 6th avenue area: The Garage. Jonathan's not a shopper (I thought they'd get a kick out of it as you never know what you can find) but I could tell he was in a rush. Deb also didn't seem to be a fleamarketer. But I still found some great items: two small dogs made in occupied China playing instruments --I collect them...the photos are in one of my flickr sets. Also the perfect xmas gift for someone. As I know at least a few of the people with whom I exchange gifts read my blog, I won't say what. But useful and interesting. And two very nice sets of buttons: one bunch of off white celluloid and one bunch of clear (glass or plastic, I can't tell) and metal. I'll throw them in some bowl or dish.
Then I took them to the Chelsea flower market, which is an old factory building that is wonderfully decorated. It has little shops: Bakeries, a market with fruit, veggies, and cheese, a wine store, an English shop, an Italian food store and cafe, a fish store, soup place, dairy, etc. We had tea at the newly moved Tea Salon. This used to be a wonderful place for tea and lunch on 20th street off 5th avenue. You could also buy loose teas there. Now, alas it's gone way downhill. You can buy tea and food at the counter and sit but there's no service and the sandwiches are not fresh. Also, the tea is all tinned. What a disappointment. I probably won't return.
Today I had lunch with Lisa Tuttle and her family. The restaurant we were going to meet at on 14th street was closed so we went to a different one, and Italian one that was ok but nothing special. Then running around a bit, and running uptown for dinner with the Rodens and Stefan Dziamienowicz. Just got home from that.
I finished moving the shoes. Have four bags of clothes and shoes to take to the Salvation Army (I hope I have time tomorrow). Have no idea what to wear to the Oz party tomorrow. It's supposed to be warmer during the day and evening.
Ah, and last night I felt generous and donated another $100 to Kiva.org, helping out four other businesses from around the world.
