Photos of my workspace by Kyle Cassidy

Philadelphia photographer Kyle Cassidy is in the middle of a project to document genre writers' and editors' workspaces. He and his friend/helper Colin came by yesterday to photograph mine. Believe it or not I cleaned up the space a bit before they arrived. Anyway, it was fun and I talked about how I feel about the space and how almost everything I need to work is within reach. Afterward, they took me to the Art Bar (I'd never been there, even though it's across the street) where they proceeded to get me drunk on mojitos...tsk tsk. And Kyle posted about it while we were there.

Very nice shots -- think he could come by and make my space look larger, too?

(and yay for mojitos! But not yay for mojito aftermath...)

LOL. I'm sure he could :-)

No hangover surprise surprise!

I honestly have to say, I'm more jealous over your massive living room space than your Howard collection. Yeah, that's what East Coast living does to you, lol.

It's NOT as large as it looks, although it would be a lot larger if all the books laying around the edges of the walls, next to my sofa, next to my cocktail/work table, etc etc were removed permanently :-)

[identity profile] livia-llewellyn.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, good luck with that! [::said the book hoarder::]

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I know it's hopeless. However, I'm getting the incentive to toss them, every time I trip and knock over a pile while switching my season clothing from the "library" closet to the bedroom closet and vice versa.

You can say that again.

you could always...

[personal profile] themadblonde 2009-04-20 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
relive that Lucy episode where they turned all those cartons of beans into furniture....

Never saw it but I sure can imagine it.
Interestingly (to me anyway)--more people have viewed my workspace photos than have viewed any of my other photos--and quicker :-)

must be...

the nosiness factor: We all want to know if you're a better housekeeper than we are, & if you have anything cool we might like to borrow. ;-)

sounds like book sales to me!

Sure sounds like you've got a great idea here!

It grew!

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't it amazing what technology can do?

[identity profile] charlesatan.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a lovely workspace. And significantly less cluttered than my own.

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you--I do love having a window to my back so that if I like I can just turn around and look out of it.

But as mentioned, it was considerably more cluttered until I dumped everything off the 'cocktail'/work table :-)

[identity profile] charlesatan.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I suspect I have more space in my room but uh, here's a photo of what it looks like, and this was taken a few years ago (it's significantly more cluttered now): http://picasaweb.google.com/charlesatan/BibliophileStalker?authkey=Gv1sRgCI7Dx6H4p_u9BA#5082744001060514530

Compared to mine, yours is neat!

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. I concede :-) I do try to put away all my plastic bags.

[identity profile] charlesatan.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Now I remember what's missing in your photos: your cats! (I like how Dinah's camouflaged as furniture.)

You also have a great head museum...

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. We persuaded Dinah to come out and pose, but not Bella, who had been laying on the top of the sofa behind me just before the company came.

[identity profile] maryrobinette.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa! It's like they made your apartment into a TARDIS.

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL!

[identity profile] nick-kaufmann.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool photos, Ellen! Well, except for the creepy doll heads. ;-)

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey! I LOVE my dollheads. And you call yourself a horror writer? Shame on you.

[identity profile] nick-kaufmann.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Some things are too creepy even for me!

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they're mostly really cute!

[identity profile] livia-llewellyn.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Lock your windows, Kaufman: the dollheads heard that. The dollheads are mad. REAL MAD.

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
In fact, I can see a few rushing over to your place, Nick. Uh oh....

[identity profile] simon strantzas (from livejournal.com) 2009-04-19 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
What's going on? I looked real close and couldn't see my book anywhere :P

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's probably in one of the five piles behind the rocking chair--not shown :-)

[identity profile] jenwrites.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Calico kitty love!

[identity profile] wolfsilveroak.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Looks about like my Studio}:P

[identity profile] foresthouse.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Very cool. It looks like a great place to work, and of course you look so comfortable in it. :)

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
thanks.

[identity profile] foresthouse.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
P.S. And I love Dinah moving through the photos. Hee.

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I especially like the one where she's actually in motion jumping OUT of the photo!

[identity profile] mattkressel.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That's my favorite too.
themadblonde: (Default)

just had to say...

[personal profile] themadblonde 2009-04-20 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
mmmmmm, mojitos!!!

[identity profile] kylecassidy.livejournal.com 2009-04-23 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
We had much fun. It was an excellent day -- and it was great to see "behind the scenes", your amazing art collection, & to meet Dinah and Bella (the view I had was exactly like your icon).

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-04-23 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Bella has been very bad today, knocking things over all around the apt. Making up for her disappearing act while you were here.
