Naked City: New Tales of Urban Fantasy is (pretty much) done

This is the TOC in the correct order. However, one more story will be in there before the book goes into production and I'm not sure where it will appear in the anthology. This is being published by St. Martin's Press in spring 2010.

Naked City: New Tales of Urban Fantasy

Curses Jim Butcher
How the Pooka Came To New York City Delia Sherman
On the Slide Richard Bowes
The Duke of Riverside Ellen Kushner
Oblivion by Calvin Klein Christopher Fowler
Picking up the Pieces Pat Cadigan
Underbridge Peter S. Beagle
Priced To Sell Naomi Novik
The Bricks of Gelecek Matthew Kressel
Weston Walks Kit Reed
The Projected Girl Lavie Tidhar
The Way Station Nathan Ballingrud
And Go Like This John Crowley
Noble Rot Holly Black
Daddy Long Legs of the Evening Jeffrey Ford
The Skinny Girl Lucius Shepard
The Colliers’ Venus Caitlín R. Kiernan
King Pole, Gallows Pole, Bottle Tree Elizabeth Bear

I'm "handing" (emailing the file) the book to my editor either today or tomorrow (I'm awaiting a last go over/response to edits from one writer. This one's been a bear and I'm relieved that it's done.

Wow! Do I really have to wait until 2010? This anthology looks fantastic.

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a very mixed bag covering cities from Berlin to New York to Mexico City (and some imaginary ones) and it's got ghoul lovers, city destroyers, a story featuring the Seattle troll, and the real reason for the curse on the Chicago Cubs!

It's like dangling candy in front of a baby!

I hope the rest of the production process goes smoothly for you. Be sure to let us know when it's released.

LOL. Thanks--Definitely.

It's nice that my OTHER antho Lovecraft Unbound, which I hope to be handing in next week will be out October 09!!!! Smaller publisher, faster placement in the production queue, I guess.

There's a troll in Seattle?

[personal profile] themadblonde 2009-02-19 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, I'm sure there are many, but seriously, is this a recognised legend?

Yup:

Fremont Troll (http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2236)

And btw, this isn't the Haunted Legends anthology that Nick Mamatas are co-editing, which are revisionings of actual existing ghost stories and urban legends.

Thanks for posting about the troll! I never knew! It's wonderful!

Every time I go to Seattle, friends drive me past it! In Peter Beagle's story, it's pretty menacing.

How utterly delightful!

Man, if I was a kid, I'd be living by that statue. I love the idea of the Trollaween celebration too. Thank you for the link!

With a lineup of names like that, how on *earth* do you decide which ones to highlight on the cover?

It sounds very cool.

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Not my job-the publisher decides that (hopefully with my input)--or they'll put everyone's name on the back cover....

[identity profile] zeelandia.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Just imagine me rolling around like a cat hopped up on on nip.

How exciting! How painful to have to wait! What an amazing line-up.

[identity profile] temporus.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this is going on the Wishlist.

[identity profile] mercuriodrivera.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
That's an amaaaazing lineup! I can't wait to pick this up.

[identity profile] charlesatan.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Looking forward to the antho!

[identity profile] julieandrews.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, at least 3 people in there that I would've bought the anthology for all on their own.

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-02-19 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
You going to tell us who? ;-)

[identity profile] julieandrews.livejournal.com 2009-02-20 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Well.. since you asked. :)

My Clarion instructors, Ellen and Delia.

And Naomi Novik.

But some of the other names are good too, honest! Hence the 'at least'. :)

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-02-20 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
LOL --that's ok--I won't tell the others.

[identity profile] ellen-kushner.livejournal.com 2009-02-20 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
Awww.....Well, you won't be disappointed by the others, I assure you! Heady company to be in. Can't wait to read the rest! Thanks for posting this, Ellen - and be sure to let us know about the Mystery Story when it appears.

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-02-20 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
I've just emailed the ms file to my editor (yayyyyy). Yes, I will surely let everyone know once I add it to the TOC.

[identity profile] peoppenheimer.livejournal.com 2009-02-20 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
But I want it *now*!

What did you do to Peter Beagle to get a story out of him?

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-02-20 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Peter'sx been surprisingly prolific in the past few years. He's had stories in at least two of my original anthologies, and also in Eclipse Two and in F&SF. He's been writing up a storm.

Nice . . .

[identity profile] crookedfeet.livejournal.com 2009-02-20 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
Can't wait for this one-I mean it has "King Pole" in it, which is reason enough, but really, purely lovely ToC. At least the Lovecraft one will keep me occupied for a while. :)

[identity profile] prettyarbitrary.livejournal.com 2009-02-20 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
There's one for the Amazon watch-list!

[identity profile] lenora-rose.livejournal.com 2009-02-21 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh, yes. That's a line-up. This goes on the wanted list.

[identity profile] scifiguyx.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Love these collection and starred line-ups. Can't wait.

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Your enthusiasm makes me happy.
