A Whisper of Blood giveaway

I want to give away two copies of the shiny new hardcover volume which includes both of my two vampire/vampirism anthologies Blood is Not Enough and A Whisper of Blood.
The book's only available in Barnes & Noble and BN.Com, who reissued it under the Fall River imprint. Only requirement is that you blog about it.

Giving the book to the first two respondents is too easy--so I'd like to use other criteria for the giveaway-- suggestions welcome--I'm lousy at thinking up quiz questions, and besides most anything can be found on the internet so not that.

addition
The rules:

Tell me, in hundred words or less, why you are the best person to blog about A Whisper of Blood--you'll get more points for originality.

Only US readers (unless you're willing to pay the postage, which is not cheap).
You have until I return Monday night and I will choose two as soon as I can after I return.

Thanks to Eleanor Lang, publicist supreme.

Set a date range to post interest, and after the closing time do a hat-pull on the names.

I'd love to see this combo edition.

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2008-11-10 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
thanks--that a good idea. (not imaginative but likely the most practical and easy to do ;-) )

Btw, it has to be in the US because postage is too costly outside--unless the winner is willing to pay for that --which will likely cost more than the book would.

I think the contest should be to write a 100-word review of the completely imaginary fantasy-romance novel Vexation's Heartache. The writer must succinctly summarize and render judgment on the novel.

Yeah, silly, but hard to win with google!

LOL.

Go by the friends list...

[personal profile] themadblonde 2008-11-10 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
2 people w/ the highest number of friends/subscribers to their blogs get it. Though I don't really know how other blogs track that.

SOMETIMES I just wish everyone used LJ. It's SO user friendly....

Re: Go by the friends list...

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2008-11-10 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
how would I know how many friends other people have? (I'm only so-so literate on lj stuff)
themadblonde: (Default)

on lj it's easy

[personal profile] themadblonde 2008-11-10 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
go to the user info page & they should have a friends list w/ a total next to it. Other blogs you'd probably have to ask how many subscribers the writer has & take it on fait, as I'm not sure how each tallies the number.

i picked this up about a week ago and have to say they did a good job with it.
it's quite attractive and, at its price, just about the best deal in horror fiction, today.

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2008-11-10 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I'm very happy with what they did. It sold very well leading up to Halloween when they included it in their promotion but is slowing down. So here's hoping I can persuade readers to buy it for a delicious cheap --albeit very large--stocking stuffer :-).

[identity profile] alaneer.livejournal.com 2008-11-10 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
How about the winner writes a review of the book on her/his LJ.

[identity profile] alaneer.livejournal.com 2008-11-10 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for clearing that up. I understood blogging about it, but I did not equate it with a full review.

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2008-11-10 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
My friend, the publicist Eleanor Lang has come up with the idea I like best (and actually dovetails with what I was thinking): 100 words on "why I am the best person to blog about this book"--you can tell the truth, or make some entirely imaginative reason up. I'll add this to my blog post now and set a time limit.

Why I Could Blog about A Whisper of Blood

[identity profile] ruralwriter.livejournal.com 2008-11-10 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
All true: I have photophobia; often, I feel better after the sun has set (some might blame my migraines for my sensitivity to light). I've gotten sunpoisoning from being exposed to direct sunlight. I am allergic to garlic. I have pale skin. Do these traits sound familiar? I must be a vampire. I need a manual on learning how to live, er, behave as a vampire.*

More seriously, I can't imagine ever ODing on vampire fiction.

* Weekly World News might have a story on me: "Coworkers Claim They Work with Vampire!"

Biting the blog: My entry for Whisper of Blood

[identity profile] perishtwice.livejournal.com 2008-11-11 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Day fifty-seven of affliction: have joined an underground support group, Carpe Nox, to help control addiction to the red stuff. Making huge progress - came forward and admitted I had a problem. Group leader says I have made the first step to recovery! Day seventy one: minor relapse. What to do with all these Watchtower magazines? Feel guilty tossing them. Group very supportive, they say I should think positive and hang in there. This will be tough, Girl Scouts making the rounds soon. Can never resist the thin mints. Just be strong and take it one day at a time.

you're very welcome. =) while i don't have a lot of friends on my personal blog, i can post my reviews in the writing comms, book clubs, goodreads, etc to help spread the word. hope that's ok.

Re: Biting the blog: My entry for Whisper of Blood

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2008-11-11 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
Sure. Not a problem.
I'll be deciding who wins in about a week. But I hope we have at least a few more entries :-)

Why I am the best person to blog about A Whisper of Blood

[identity profile] l-l-u-w-d.livejournal.com 2008-11-11 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
Vampire stories are, forgive the pun, my life's blood as far as literature is concerned. I used to check out every single book I could find at the tiny local library that had anything at all to do with vampires, and I seek out and acquire vampire books before anything else when I have the money to spend on more. And, lately, I have been too financially embarassed to buy any books, and the library isn't the most accessible to me right now. So, I need a quick transfusion of something new to read!

A WHISPER OF BLOOD!

[identity profile] gaffa13.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I am currently dating the Twilight Queen of Darkness here in Australia. Therefore I need all the help I can get understanding Vampires.
But seriously, I blog/review books on many different websites...Horror Mall, In The Light Laymon forums, MySpace and Windows Spaces to name a few. I have gained some level of reputation around the US especially as a reviewer, and if I like the book, it has been said that my PR work is akin to having a free high profile advertising campaign.
Oh...I forgot to mention that one day I SHALL RULE THE WORLD, and then I shall remember my friends....they will die swiftly rather than suffer a long and protracted torture campaign....BWAHAHAHAHA!

Re: A WHISPER OF BLOOD!

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Very nice--are you willing/able to pay postage to oz? The book will be free but anyone outside the US has to pay the postage (which might be $11, I forget). ;-) If so, you're in the running.

Re: A WHISPER OF BLOOD!

[identity profile] gaffa13.livejournal.com 2008-11-12 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi Ellen....absolutely willing to pay postage to Australia.....I need all the help I can get with my Twilight Queen, and I am a damn fine reviewer.....and also VERY modest...in fact, I think I may be the most modest damn fine reviewer in the WORLD...which shall soon be MINE!

Re: A WHISPER OF BLOOD!

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2008-11-13 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Excellent! Then you stay in the running.

[identity profile] lcrisler.livejournal.com 2008-11-13 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'd be a good choice for the book simply because I'm a horror writer myself and I both blog and review my ass off on my website, currently hosted at http://lcrisler.wordpress.com. I'm an official reviewer for Leisure Books and I also review pretty much any other reading material that I find either particularly enjoyable or worth warning others away from.

I can be reached at crislerlincoln@yahoo.com if I'm picked, since I never use my LJ account anymore after falling in love with WordPress.

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2008-11-13 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Will do if you win.

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2008-11-18 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Five people have commented as to why they should get a copy of A Whisper of Blood to blog.
I'll pull those five names out of a hat tomorrow when I get up.
So if anyone still wants a shot, now's the time to tell me why you should get a copy.

AND THE WINNERS ARE....

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2008-11-18 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I realize that because I said originality counts, I will just choose two.

Perishtwice and gaffa13 win!

Email your mailing addresses to me at:
datlow at yahoo dot com and I will mail your books out tomorrow.

Thanks all.

LOL--turns out I don't have time to get to the PO today so I think tomorrow is when the books will go out.
