So last night I was hoping to watch Breaking the Waves but instead really crashed hard, falling asleep at 7pm and not getting up till 7am. I guess the jetlag finally caught up with me. I HOPE this is the end of it, but doubt it.
I finished the Echo Park by Connolly and wasn't as impressed as I wanted to be. Ok but not great. I recently recieved a review copy of Martin Cruz Smith's STALIN'S GHOST and hope to read that soon, but I still haven't read THE TERROR by Simmons and plenty of other novels I'd like to read. And I must get back to reading the short fiction for YBFH#21. Next up At East with the Dead edited by  Barbara and Christopher Roden. It should be excellent if on the same level as their last original anthology for Ash-Tree: Acqainted with the Night.

Boy did you take a lot of pictures! You got the URL right in this one!

The url was correct on the other --it was using "tiny url" and was for one specific set. This time I used the general url for my flickr account. That's the only difference.

You're thinking of the other picture URLs which weren't clickable. I was thinking of the Vess link.

Of course Japan would have the most beautiful manhole covers in the world. And the fox temple is astounding.

The manhole covers _are_ pretty amazing, aren't they?

There were foxes foxes everywhere!

manholes and barbies

The really surprising thing about the manhole covers is how new they look. The ones in NYC all look ancient. But if you're crazy enough to step into the street and look at them, they have fascinating inscriptions commemorating the Irish-American casting companies and the date of the doubtless unseemly municipal contract under which they were made.

The Barbie collection contains some ringers, I think. Some of the dolls are not authentic Barbie's. Some of the most outlandish ensembles are actually authentic. But other dolls look to me like they're
"redressed". Outfitting Barbie in ho' clothes is one of the main activities of thousands of middle aged males who, I believe, outnumber little girls as the main collectors of the dolls. What gets done to Barbie's boyfriend Ken I'll leave to your imagination. And of G.I. Joe I will not even speak.

Perhaps they're not manhole covers--none of the ones I photographed were in the street--they were all on sidewalks (I didn't notice/look when crossing streets).

I cannot judge whether the collector dressed his own dolls. As for which are genuine or not--many were made in other countries--Japan, for example...Whether they're "genuine" Barbies licensed by the Barbie corp is up for grabs.
