Usually you get a notification via email that someone has suggested an application to you. You'll see a list on the top right of your main home page that will list all friend requests, other requests, notifications, etc.
Then you can click on a little link underneath it that says "block this application". Usually you'll get multiple invites to all sorts of silly extras you can add to your page - most of them are worthless.
No doubt you're going to be inundated with friend requests - it's up to you how loose or strict you want to be with that.
Make sure to trawl through your security setting so you're familiar with how much info you're sharing with others (it's on the menu bar on the top right). Of course, if you keep your information simple and brief on your page that's not so much of a problem.
