Well, it's not as bad as MySpace. That's about all I can say for it ;) I suppose also I've found a different crowd of my friends over there that hang out on the facebook chat application (versus general IM, though they may be there as well and I just don't know).
LOL. Thanks. I've found you can email back and forth-there's a chat option? That could be nice....although I disabled my old chat apps that would annoy me all the time with friends trying to get my attention. Ugh.
It hides the chat in a slimline at the bottom of the webpage window--but you can pop the chat out so it's its own little window, so long as you don't close the facebook page. So now I have a facebook tab always open (for the last week or so, since I ran into someone on facebook chat that I'd been trying to get in better touch with). :)
Friends getting your attention is definitely a hazard.
To be fair, if I were to start up on Facebook I would be swamped with current and former students, who don't exactly understand the public private boundary the way that most people do . . .
Oh righhhhht --the penguin bat... I completely forgot about that. And yes, I admit I did play it for a very long time. It's till on my bookmarks --hmmmm. Nah!
I've found it a useful way to get in contact with friends in my old city. I'm not all into the promotional aspect of things like myspace and facebook so take that fwiw.
I've decided to ignore most of the silly app requests and friends requests from people I don't remember meeting, and I've decided it is sheer madness to try to compartmentalize my personal, SF, and professional lives because they are now co-mingled on Facebook. But hey, you can be my friend. We've met at least two or three times, right? ;)
I can see how it would be a useful tool for promotion but I'm always antsy about promoting myself in anyway. I feel dumb, basically. Then again, I don't actually have books to promote. *grins*
I've found there are a lot of time wasting games that you get invited to join, so I pretty much ignore all invites.
