I'll send you an invite to Superpoke so you'll see what it's like (it's cute, but feel free to ignore it, I won't be offended). Usually you get a notification via email that someone has suggested an application to you. You'll see a list on the top right of your main home page that will list all friend requests, other requests, notifications, etc.
Then you can click on a little link underneath it that says "block this application". Usually you'll get multiple invites to all sorts of silly extras you can add to your page - most of them are worthless.
No doubt you're going to be inundated with friend requests - it's up to you how loose or strict you want to be with that.
Make sure to trawl through your security setting so you're familiar with how much info you're sharing with others (it's on the menu bar on the top right). Of course, if you keep your information simple and brief on your page that's not so much of a problem.
They come from your friends, via email and also show up in your notifications.
Facebook (for me) functions best as a sort of daily newspaper of my close friends' activities whenever they update their status. But do beware the games. They are a time-suck.
And if you find yourself having to ignore too many friend requests from strangers, you can also customize your profile's privacy under settings> privacy settings >search to make yourself harder to find.

When I joined I automatically set everything on "friends only" so I should be ok.
