Getting together with friends and family

Yesterday evening, Kris Rusch-- in town enroute to a French book tour (lucky her!)-- and I had a lovely, gossipy dinner at Miracle Grill, the nouvellete tex mex place near the beginning (or end, depending on your pov) of Bleecker Street. We caught up on our lives and dished the dirt! Lots of fun (my lips are sealed). She'll be stopping over in NYC on her way back in a few weeks but she'll be with a friend new to NY and probably won't have time to get together.

Tomorrow night is the monthly KGB reading --it celebrates the publication of The Best of Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet. Jeff Ford, Karen Russell, Veronica Schanoes, and Geoffrey Godwin will be reading. We'll be heading to Grand Szechuan on St Mark's Place for dinner afterwards for anyone who'd like to join us.

Thursday I'll be visiting my folks and wishing my dad Happy 91st birthday (it's the 25th). I tried posting a photo of him and my mom but it didn't work...oh well, you can see them on my flickr account in the "Datlow family in Tanglewood" set if you want.

I googled the Miracle Grill, and from the reviews, it sounds like the kind of hideously pretentious place that would get me tasered by a snooty chef dee kwizeeene. Spring rolls with "Asian-inflected, ginger-sparked julienned cabbage"?! "Baroquely mischievous dishes"? Gak. Gimme tex-mex cooked with lard, plz. heh.

I don't know what menu you're looking at but it's not the one below. Their food's really good and not pretentious at all. But I did misspeak. It's not tex mex but southwestern--a very different animal.

Their hamburgers are the best and come with home made potato chips. I've also had the quesadilla appetizer and their Crispy Cornmeal Crusted Calamari with chipotle hot and sour sauce is wonderful. They have fancier dishes but nothing like "Baroquely mischievous dishes"--you must be looking at a different restaurant.

Yep, that's the place. I guess I was just turned off by the tone of the review (http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/7117581/new_york_ny/miracle_bar_and_grill.html) I read of it. heh.

Please don't blame the restaurant for the review--it's a really dumb, inaccurate, and yes, absolutely pretentious review.
