Working on YBFH #21--still

If anyone's wondering where I am, I've been breezing through the leftover material I received in 2007 for YBFH#21--so that I can make way for 2008's stuff, which is piling up in one pile that's about ready to fall over. Anyway, I'm getting there.Everything has to be done and in by March 15th and I think I will actually make the deadline--barring unforeseen illness, etc.

Still mulling over new cd player vs hooking up my computer to my large speakers on the walls. Did some research and there don't seem to be any small cd players (mine's a stacked system that is 11 inches wide--I checked a lot of brands and stores online and they're all 17" wide or larger. I liked having three cds in the machine at a time, even if I had to get up each time one finished and change it--the only things I worry about when listening on my computer (which I'm doing now) is that when I listen to the radio (WBGO has too much static on my radio) online there are too many windows open and I sometimes shut one that turns off the music. The other thing is that I wonder if it slows my computer down.

Some SF/F/ news:

Depending on the specs of your computer and the program you're running, the CD player/program will slow down your computer although I expect that it's usually negligible. If you're streaming the radio from your computer, it's certainly eating up a portion of your Internet connection.

Good luck with the editing work!

Thanks for that info. Yeah, I'm streaming radio--but I don't feel my connection's slow enough to give me problems--I can always shut it off temporarily.

Next up: reading some mss.

If you can't find anything new there's always ebay
http://electronics.search.ebay.com/cd-player_Shelf-Compact-Systems_W0QQfrisZ2QQsacatZ39819QQsatitleZQ22cdQ20playerQ22

Or you might ask for a recommendation regarding a replacement player on a board like www.audiokarma.org . I've found the members there very helpful with old audio tech.

I thought of ebay but I only need to replace the one part of my system and that would be like looking for a needle in the haystack, I think.
I will try audiokarma...thanks...it's funny--the set isn't that old but I guess now that everyone downloads music I guess cd players are indeed "old tech." :-)

& record players...

are practically heiroglyphics, apparently.

I've had an audio-tech nightmare kind of day myself. I think I want to go hide somewhere w/ my grandmothers 1911 music box. It plays 9 songs & no disc changing required.

ALMOST was...

it's a long & stupid story (ie stupidity on MY part) that ALMOST cost me $100 I didn't have to spend, & DID unnecessarily stress out my poor, very ill hubby, but all's well (I hope) & we should have a working stereo sometime in the next few weeks (first time in 6-7 years).

I don't know what OS you're using, but if I use streaming audio, I can always drop the window that running it into a second desktop (I have four on my Linix installation, and I think Macs have multiple ones too) so I can never close it by accident. Probably does slow the system down a little, but I don't notice much.

If you have an extra older computer, like an old notebook, you might be better hooking up a $100 500 Gig drive to it and ripping all your CDs. It's very freeing, being able to queue up as much music as you want, though, of course, depending on your system, sound quality might be an issue...

I just had to get used to it. It's working fine now.

Spin it small

"Did some research and there don't seem to be any small cd players"

Depends on what you wish to connect the CD player too. There are shelf systems, portable CD players, and even small DVD players that also will sometimes play CDs.

Go to:

http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Group/ProductMenu.aspx?g=120900&tp=209

for a look at some shelf systems.

BestBuy, Target, Walmart, etc. all offer shelf systems, portable CD players, and small DVD players that will also play CDs.

Those are cute, but I don't need new speakers--I've got great speakers on my walls...it's just the cd player I need--although that Sony IS the right size. Maybe I could sell the speakers to someone else...

Without getting too technical I don't know what's on the end of your speaker cable/wire...whether it's bare wire or plugs. This has to be taken into consideration because if you intend to connect it to your CD player directly then the connection would have to be compatible.

That's why it may all be easier to just use my computer with the speakers...

If your speakers will plug into your computer then they will also plug into a portable CD player's headphone jack.
