supporating wounds and me

I couldn't decide whether to blog about this or not but since La Cadigan, who has took me to St Bart's twice has...I'll just cut and paste her report (she's very succinct):

"It was one of those stupid things. Three weeks ago, Ellen fell down some stairs. Not long afer she arrived here, a bruised area above her ankle, just below her shin, suddenly decided to swell up and turn pink. I insisted she go get it looked at, so it was off to the Minor Injuries Unit at St. Bart's. The nurses there decided she'd be OK with ice and elevation.

Ha.

Today we had to take her back and as it turns out, she has a rather inconvenient infection, must gobble two different antibiotics several times a day, can't drink, and must be carried everywhere on luxurious velvet pillows. Or by taxi.

Of course, she always had to be carried everywhere on luxurious velvet pillows but now it's mandatory as opposed to simply by her whim.:)"

So it's cut down on my running around--had to cancel a tour of Scotland Yard (although if the leg's better we may do it on Tuesday afternoon); had to toss out the idea of going to the theater tomorrow night, and forget Chinese New Year's Saturday--no parade for me.
In addition to the antibiotics I'm chomping down ibuprofin. I hope I hope that the antibiotics will start working and that there will be improvement tomorrow. Luckily, it's been localized--no temperature or (much) spreading. This sucks.

And I can't get out there to carry you about on a litter. My entire purpose in life becomes a reality, and I have the Atlantic Ocean in the way. Blues.

That's ok-wouldn't want you to get a hernia :-)

Oh, Ellen! Look after those legs!

[identity profile] relby.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Get well soon! I had a vigorous sleep-deprived hike all over Land's End not long after a broken leg surgery; not recommended. Enjoy being carried on a litter!

I'm sorry. I hope you feel better soon.

Ow, that sounds painful... and as I recall, London ain't a great place to need medical help, my girlfriend found herself shunted from ER to ER when she had an ear infection there. :( But it sounds like they helped you pretty quick smart, and hopefully those anti-life pills will kick in and kick arse (as opposed to ass, as you're in Engaland).

I'm sure Pat owns a rickshaw, she's just not admitting to it...

Maybe I was lucky --the only thing I could complain about is that they didn't give me antibiotics during my first visit. But everything was free, which is more than I could say for US medical help.

I'm hoping (very hard) that when I wake up in the morning my infection has not spread-and that the pain will be somewhat less. I'm holding off taking more ibuprofin till I go to bed.

Heal up soon, Ellen.

[identity profile] kaaronwarren.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't believe you missed out on a tour of Scotland Yard! Surely some nice English bobby could carry you?

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. That's a thought. Maybe I'll ask Michael to bring me around by wheelchair--hoping to reschedule for Tuesday afternoon!

[identity profile] raebryant.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
A bottle of wine . . . that should do the trick. Once you're off the antibiotics, of course.

I'm impressed by the luxurious velvet pillows. Do you get tanned, muscular slave boys too?

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah...if only...

[identity profile] chris-reynaga.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yikes, feel better soon!

[identity profile] vylar-kaftan.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Eek! Feel better soon.

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you, EVERYONE!

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh; be better soon! At least you were traveling somewhere with good free health care!

[identity profile] splinister.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you feel better soon, Ellen. At least you've got broadband access! :)

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. I thank my lucky stars for that.

I hope you feel better soon, Ellen.

Best,

John

Ugh. Here's wishing you a speedy recovery.

[identity profile] maryrobinette.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
No drinking?! But, but... you're in London. Oh cruel fate.

[identity profile] stephen-dedman.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
St Bart's... wasn't Jack the Ripper chief of surgery there in Time After Time?

Get well soon: in the meantime, imitate the action of a cat and make the most of the luxurious pillows!

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
Dunno.

You mean lay on them looking pretty or clawing them to bits? ;-) I've known cats to do either.

[identity profile] stephanieburgis.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 10:04 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yuck. I hope this gets better soon!

[identity profile] nerdware.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Best wishes.

[identity profile] ellen-datlow.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. I haven't had to take ibuprofin today so I'm hoping that means good things.I stayed at home, kept my leg up, napped, and have been taking my antibiotics like clockwork.

Sometime this weekend, I'm going to have to go to an open clinic to have the dressing changed. I don't believe I'll have time tomorrow because of my Poe event early afternoon, so it's likely Sunday.

[identity profile] foresthouse.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
Oh dear! That stinks! I hope you feel better very soon. (Also: no drinking? Feh!)
