Status of YBFH #22 IMPORTANT

Further to Gavin and Kelly's post about Bad news about YBFH --yes the YBFH is no more but I'm delighted to announce that I've just been offered a two book deal with Night Shade to edit a Best of the Year in Horror anthology (not titled yet)--for this year and next...

The deal is not set in stone but there's no reason to believe it's not a "go."

So thank you Terri, Kelly, Gavin, and of course Jim Frenkel and Tom Canty for the many enjoyable years I've worked with you all on this massive project.

And here's a virtual toast to my new endeavor.

addition: I wrote the above off the cuff yesterday because I felt pressure to get something out but I'd like to add this.

Without Jim Frenkel, the series would haven't existed at all. It was his brainchild from the very first volume, to gather fantasy and horror short fiction in one place. He asked me and Terri Windling to co-edit such a book, she handling fantasy, me horror. We agreed and that's how it all began --Jim was the packager for all twenty-one years of the existence of the anthology.

added January 14:
Terri sums it all up most graciously and eloquently on her blog

I was supremely bummed when I heard last night about the demise of YBFH. Aside from all of its other fine qualities, YBFH has been important to the well-being of my magazine all these years. I'm delighted to hear about the new collection. Best of luck.

I too was really distraught when I heard that YBFH was not continuing. I've always loved it! I really looked forward to purchasing another year, and I was crushed. sniffle!

Still, its really heartening to hear that you'll be doing work with Night Shade. I'm thrilled for you, and on a personal note... very happy to hear about it! Can't wait to read it! At least I know the quality will be good if you are the editor.

That's good news. I was genuinely sad to hear the news about YBFH.

Very sad, but fingers crossed for a long-term success with Night Shade.

Ellen, it's the end of an era. I'm saddened to see YBFH go, but I'm delighted to hear that you are working on a Best of Horror anthology, which is needed. Best of luck with that two-book deal.

Sad to hear about YBFH, but happy to hear you're on board with Night Shade and doing a best of the year in horror for them. I'm looking forward to reading the first book in your new series, and those to follow.

Congrats on the new gig.

I'll miss the joy of balancing that weighty tome on my chest each morning as I read a story in bed before heading off to work.

Hopefully your new horror anthology will provide a similar sense of pressure.

Congratulations on the two book deal! Given the current state of publishing and economy, a two-booker is fabulous news for everyone. Sad to see the YBFH on hiatus, and I use the word hiatus in a hopeful sense . . . perhaps we'll see a fantasy, horror compilation again in the future?

Thanks for keeping the faith for so long, Ellen, and for continuing to do so. Your unwavering taste is nothing short of inspiring, and you have my personal support throughout. Looking forward to what you bring to the next chapter.

Oh no, that's so sad about YBFH! Congrats on the other deal with Night Shade, though.

The anthology is going to be missed ... is it possible that another publisher will put it up?

You, Kelly & Gavin, Jim, Terri, and all of the people involved did an excellent job with YBFH!! The anthologies are an important part of speculative fiction history, and that's no small feat.

End of an Era

I just learned YBFH won’t be continuing. Given YBFH's stature, it's a bit like hearing they canceled the Academy Awards. Like everyone else, I've got a shelf full of the volumes. Thank you so much for all the editions you created (which I'm sure took an immense amount of work), and for all the writers you've helped these past two decades. I've always considered it a great honor that you gave several stories of mine honorable mentions over the years, and even included a story of mine in your 19th edition. That nod from you meant/means a lot to me, as I know it does to so many other authors you've helped. I hope you have tremendous, dazzling success with your new horror anthology series! Ellen, I was deeply saddened when I read from Gavin that YBFH was going to cease. Reading Years Best Fantasy and Horror has been a yearly inspiration, and was part of what got me into this crazy writing game to begin with. You and all the editors and creators have done stellar work over the years. Thank you.

I am looking forward to Years Best Horror, and many other projects in the years ahead. The new writers and new words keep on living.
