I don't think Joss Whedon does very well with episodes that are over an hour long. He has a tremendous amount of practice with long story arcs being told an hour at a time and is quite good at it. He also doesn't seem to do endings all that well either.

Of the entire Firefly story, Serenity was probably the weakest piece.
